This is an exercise I started adding to my regular practice routing. It’s playing each of the scales I am working on with different timing.
The video is very “Uncut”, and there are a couple of spots in it that are…, well should have been re-done, but hey, the whole point of this blog is about documenting my progress as I learn and improve my guitar playing, so unfortunately for you, the viewer, you get to sit through the bloopers, Sorry bout that.
The rhythms I am counting in the video are…
1 2 3 4
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
1 + a 2 + a 3 + a 4 + a
In the video I also mention a book titled, Rhythmic Lead Guitar I thoroughly recommend any of Barrett’s book’s. He is an amazing teacher, and for only a couple of buck’s you will dramatically improve your knowledge of the guitar.
I like to use this technique as a dexterity exercise for my picking hand. I’m a lefty playing a righty guitar. For some reason I have a better time playing 3/4 rather than 4/4, but like you said its good to practice with several different time signatures.
Hi Sam, thanks for your comments, timing is definitely something that I need to concentrate on, you probably noticed in the video that I had to correct myself a couple of times as I played through the scales.
All the same, its great that you’re making this blog. I find it helpful to see someone else’s interpretations on learning technique. I’m teaching myself right now and I only have one friend who also knows guitar, but he’s leagues beyond me and we can only relate so much. Keep up the posts! Cheers.
Thanks for your comments Sam really appreciate them, I am in a similar situation with my brother, he has continued with his guitar ever since our early days of playing when we were in our teens, whereas I just gave up.
These days I have a totally new vigor for the guitar and a whole new appreciation for learning the theory that makes for a good guitarist.
If you want to get your hands on some really good learning material I can’t speak highly enough of Barrett’s books. Plus he is a really friendly guy, any time I ask him a question via email he always responds with an answer.
